The session will include opportunities for questions about our process and feedback on the approach. |

| Matthew Durrant | Crossroads of the West Council | Conservation | 19th-Century Romanticism in the Arts and the American Conservation Movement | The arts in the 19th century were characterized by a fascination with the sublime and transcendent qualities of nature. While the Enlightenment focused on rational thought, reason, and the scientific method, Romanticism rejected these ideas in favor of emotional expression, irrationality, and aesthetic beauty. In the United States, Romantic landscape artists such as Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, and Thomas Cole were instrumental in persuading the public and government officials of the need to preserve the magnificent landscapes of the west. This lecture will discuss how the arts played a significant role in the development of the early conservation movement of the United States. |
